Peek inside architect Scott Johnson’s Wall House – for sale in Ojai Valley, California

US architecture practice Johnson Fain is best known for its slick skyscrapers and urban high rises. But the family home of the firm’s co-founder, Scott Johnson, in the Ojai Valley is a landscape-hugging compound that plays with light, materials and bucolic views.

Wall House gets its name from the long floor-to-ceiling wall of glass that peels back to the rear yard with its 25 ft long swimming pool, fire pit and outdoor kitchen. The 5,2000 sq ft main home hunkers within 12 acres of meadow, bookend on two sides by creeks running from the Los Angeles Padres National Forest to the Ventura River. In the living room, a hung ceiling of Douglas Fir, suspended between two colossal board-formed concrete walls, creates dramatic shadow play across the floors. Column free, the space has one continuous and open view throughout the length of the space.

In addition to the main three-bedroom property, there’s also a separate gum and guest suite and an art studio with dramatic sliding glass walls, surrounded by fruit and vegetable orchards.

Johnson designed Wall House in 2014, and it has featured widely editorially from Dwell to a tome by Thames and Hudson on architect’s homes. Johnson and his wife, gynaecologist Dr Margaret Bates, have listed the California property for sale via Aaron Kirman and Danelle Lavin of Aaron Kirman Group at Compass for $10.5m.
